We already know that Xiaomi is working on a foldable smartphone which reportedly folds over three times. Well, this could be India’s first foldable device too as the reports are coming that Xiaomi will be launching it either at the end of April or the start of June this year.
Xiaomi previously revealed that its foldable device will be half of the price Samsung’s Galaxy Fold($2000). According to the reports, Xiaomi’s foldable device will be priced at $999 which translates around Rs 74,999. The reports came from Xiaomi while talking to iGyaan. If we compare the price with Huawei Mate X’s price($2,600) then the difference is even bigger.
To recall, a lot of foldable devices debuted at this year’s Mobile World Congress(MWC) in February. With all the high tech technology used in them, the only thing they struggled at was the price. However, Xiaomi, as always, is undercutting all other big names by announcing a device at half the price.
We are still to know any name for the device but some rumors surrounding the name suggest that it will be either the Mi Flex or Mi Fold. Xiaomi has released a concept video for their new device and also gave few words about how the foldable device is changing Xiaomi’s own patent user interface MIUI.
Why Xiaomi Smartphone Will be Cheaper than Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X?
But what did Xiaomi do to make it different and cheaper from Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X?
The answer lies in the display technology which is said to be entirely different from Mate X and Galaxy Fold.
Galaxy Fold houses a display built by Samsung itself and Huawei features a BOE display. Both of them are using high-quality OLED panels. On the other hand, Xiaomi’s foldable smartphone will be housing the untested Visionox Technology OLED displays. This will be a new thing in OLED displays which can either work or fall. Until now, we cannot say if the quality will be compromised or not in the new display.
Other than that, rumors are also there that Xiaomi device will feature the similar Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset with 8GB of RAM.
While Galaxy Fold comes with two displays, one on the inside for tablet mode and one on the outside, Mate X comes with a single display that folds outside that divides into two displays. Xiaomi takes the foldable thing to another level by offering two foldable hinges- one on the left and one on the right. It enables the tab to turn into a smaller phone mode.
