Xiaomi has built a strong laptop portfolio in its home market China. Inspired by Apple’s MacBook series, Xiaomi has been launching laptops under the Mi brand name. Last year Xiaomi launched Mi Notebook Air with Intel Core i5-7Y54 7th-gen processor and Windows 10 Home Edition in December to compete with MacBook Air.
Recently, Xiaomi gave its Notebook Air an upgrade with new screen size and new processor with Notebook Air 12.5-inch(2019). Since it is competing directly against Apple MacBook Air, let’s see how the two laptops stand against each other on paper as we get on with this comparison.
Xiaomi Notebook Air previously had a 13.3-inch display but the Chinese tech company has revised the lineup by introducing a new 12.5-inch variant this term with a 1080×1920 pixels of resolution. Whereas Apple MacBook Air has a 13.3-inch display with 2560×1600-pixel resolution. When it comes to the display, you cannot count an Apple device out. The color reproduction and viewing angles, both beat the Xiaomi device by a large margin.
However, Notebook Air is a thin laptop with a wieght as low as 1.07kg in front of Apple’s 1.23kg device. Moreover, Xiaomi laptop is available in Silver and Gold color options and Apple is only available in the Silver color variant. Considering the difference in the displays, being lightweight is not that big of a thing.
Under the hood, Xiaomi Notebook Air comes in two options with latest 8th generation chipsets of both Intel i5 and Intel Core m3 coupled with 4GB and 8GB of RAM. Notebook Air 2019 version is the cheaper one with 4GB RAM and Core m3 giving Xiaomi an option to expand its reach from high-end users to students and basic home users. Apple MacBook Air, on the other hand, has a 7th-gen Intel i5 powered by an 8GB RAM. Both the devices feature 128 Solid State Drive to empower the memory. Featuring an SSD, both will be quick to start with flash memory support. While Apple MacBook Air doesn’t feature any other hard drive, we are still to get any information about the new Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air.
Over that, Mi Notebook Air comes with original Windows 10 out-of-the-box whereas the Apple laptop has Mac OS updated to the latest version.
Looking at Xiaomi’s approach to a wider userbase, we think that Mi Notebook Air(2019) wins the spec sheet department.
We can sum it all up in a single line when it comes to laptop prices with Xiaomi as a clear winner starting at 3,599 CNY which translates to Rs 37,233 approx. against Apple MacBook Air which carries a price tag of Rs 73,990 in India. Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air sports a 3-speaker setup whereas Apple has a stereo sound system on their respective laptops. Over that, Mi Notebook has another advantage when it comes to available ports with 1 x USB 3.0 (Type A), 1 x USB 3.0 (Type C) on the device in front of Apple’s offerings of 2 x USB 2.0, 2 x USB 3.0.
We think that Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air (2019) will certainly get an advantage over Apple MacBook Air sales in the Chinese market with a good spec sheet and offerings at quite affordable prices.
