The Facebook-owned WhatsApp announced that it will soon stop working on numerous mobile phones all across the world as they have reached the end of their supported lifespan. This clearly means that the mobile phones which are very old could not be able to access this well known messaging app. Not only this but also the WhatsApp has officially confirmed through its support page that it will stop operating all these devices from December 31 of this year. Additionally, the company has mentioned that the phones which are operating under the Windows Mobile operating system will also be not able to operate after December 31. The information does not end here. There is also news for iPhone users. Any iPhone which is running on the software which is older than iOS 7 will also not be able to operate. On the other hand, all the Android phones which are operating under the version 2.3.7 will also face the same problem. Having said that, both the iOS as well as the Android version blocks will not happen in December but it will take place on February 1, 2020.

So the previous iPhones which were released are running iOS 7 was iPhone 5C as well as iPhone 5S. It was further superseded by iOS 8 in the year 2014. So if you are the one who purchased an iPad or iPhone after that date then you do not have to worry. On the other hand, the Android version 2.3.7 was called ‘Gingerbread’ which was launched in the year 2010. But by the month of February in the year 2011, the same has been supplanted by Android version 3.0 which was known as Honeycomb. So if you are rocking a Samsung Galaxy S or Google Nexus S, then you do not have to worry at all. If we talk about Windows mobile then it is even older as it was launched in 2003 and operated till 2010 such as the Motorola MPx200. WhatsApp added that any user who used all these older mobile phones cannot be able to create new accounts or even reverify their existing accounts. The company officials mentioned, “because we no longer actively develop for these operating systems, some features might stop functioning at any time.”

When will WhatsApp stop working on old mobile phones?

WhatsApp continuously stops support for the old phones by forcing the users for keeping up to date if they wanted to continue using this app. Following are the dates that WhatsApp will stop working on older mobile phone systems:

  • December 31, 2017: Blackberry 10 and BlackBerry OS
  • June 30, 2017:  Nokia Symbian S60
  • December 31, 2018: Nokia S40
  • February 1, 2020: iOS 7 and Android 2.3.7
  • December 31, 2019: Windows Mobile

WhatsApp also added in its support page, “as we look ahead to our next 7 years, we want to focus our efforts on the mobile platforms the vast majority of people use. While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future. This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with family, friends and near and dear ones using WhatsApp. If you use one of these affected phones, we recommend upgrading to a newer Android, iPhones or Windows phone to continue using WhatsApp.”

Now by ditching the old systems, the Facebook-owned WhatsApp is focussing on adding some new features for current systems. Currently, they are working on adding a dark mode which will immensely help in reducing the usage of battery.
