Spotify introduces a new feature called ‘Group Session’, which is composed to allow two or more of its Premium users in the same space to share control over the music being played. More of a party mode kind of feature. This ‘Group Session’ feature can be used when the ‘host’ or person in charge taps the connect menu in the bottom left corner of the Play Screen and sharing the scan-able QR code with other users. Each participant now scans the host’s code with the Spotify app and controls music, they can play, pause, skip, select tracks to add to queue, and control volume.
The intention of the company by introducing this feature is to make quarantine times a little bit fun for the families, friends staying at home. They can share and control the music being played. Though this group session feature was in the developing stage from last year, the basic idea for its existence is that its premium users contribute to a party playlist, which encourages downloading of Spotify apps and for those who are free users get its premium facility so that they can control party playlist. However, this Corona pandemic halt gatherings and people quarantine themselves in their homes, sensing this, Spotify channels it in a sophisticated way and make it available for its premium users to control the music.
Spotify already has the feature for the group to share the music. Spotify offers to build collaborative playlists with friends, where everyone can add, delete, or reorder tracks. Also, Spotify premium family plan members can listen to a personalized playlist called ‘Family Mix’ that combines the music everyone enjoys in the family. However, neither of these features can offer a way to collaborate in real-time, as Group Session does. This is the one thing that separate Group session feature from other features of Spotify. The Group Session feature can support up to 100 users at a time, and all of them have to be in the same space.
