OPPO’s R-series might be entering the Indian market for the first time tomorrow but it is not new to the world. OPPO has become one of the fastest growing smartphone manufacturers in the country, especially hitting the mid-tier segment. According to a report from Counterpoint Research, there has been a 200% spike in OPPO’s shipment market share, initially coming from a low 3% in 2016 Q1 and 9% in 2018 Q2. This shows how the smartphone manufacturer has finally found a road to success in a highly competitive Indian smartphone market.

The penetration has extended from the Indian market to a global scale also. As per a report by IDC, the company holds 8.6% of global smartphone market share. The numbers speak and somewhere R-series has been a huge success factor OPPO’s global success. A Counterpoint report quoted OPPO R9 as the best selling smartphone of 2017 in the Chinese market. In fact, the top 10 best selling smartphones of that year had three OPPO devices including two R-series devices.

OPPO is launching R17 tomorrow in India but what’s the history of R-series and which smartphones of the series have dominated smartphone markets before, let’s have a look.


This was the first entry of OPPO in R series back in 2013. The device came out as a magic performer for low-light photos. The back of the device featured an 8MP Sony IMX179 lens with 1/3.2 inches of size. With a large f/2.0 aperture and similarly bigger sensor size, the camera pulled off great images in low lights. The best feature of the device was a Blue Glass Filter, which was claimed by OPPO to reduce up to 90% of infrared.


After the first device OPPO R1, the company introduced another smartphone to follow up. The OPPO R3 was the next device to take the place in the OPPO R-Series. With a similar camera to its predecessor, this device centralized more on design. Built out of an Aluminium and Magnesium alloy, the entire device was as thin as 6.3mm. A premium looking device with a good camera took all the limelight it deserved. There was a ‘Golden Arc’ edge introduced on this device to make the smartphone more comfortable to hold.


With OPPO R5, the company detailed expelled the drawbacks from the previous devices. The Chinese manufacturer turned things up a notch with a 13MP rear camera that featured company’s own Pure Image 2.0+ tech. The phone was full of cool features. One of them being UltraHD- the ability to click multiple 13MP photographs at one go and stitch it together to make a 50MP. Users also had the option shift focus after the photograph is clicked on this 4.85mm thin.


The next up was OPPO R7, a premium looking metallic body device that hosted an aircraft grade aluminum-magnesium alloy. As a shock to everyone, the metallic ratio of this device was 92.3%. Metal was claimed to go through 48 different polishing processes to come out as a perfect looking premium handset. Moreover, there was a 13MP lens installed at the front side of the device with Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF). The quicker focus speeds ensured quick captures.


OPPO R9 came out to power company’s back and front camera units together. The device featured a 16MP front and 13MP rear lens. The phone’s camera app was built to enhance photo experience with several filters and picture modes such as the OPPO’s Beautify 4.0 technology and screen flash. The device became popular enough to host three more variants including OPPO R9 Plus, R9s, and R9s Plus.


With OPPO R11, the company moved to next level camera game with three lenses featured on the device. The rear end of the device featured a dual-camera setup of 20MP + 16MP lenses combined. The user was able to enjoy 2x optical zoom on their device as well as wide angle shots with a large f/1.7 aperture lens. This phone had it all from low-light photography to a stable zoom. OPPO R11 was even able to click Portrait photos really beautifully. The company then proudly released its variants including R11s and R11s Plus with even more features and an 18:9 display aspect ratio.


The OPPO R15 took the game of OPPO R11 and made it even battery with A.I in the camera. The power of understanding what is in the picture without user involvement won the company many more customers globally. Scene Recognition introduced in OPPO R15 is able to recognize 120 scenes. The A.I enables camera quality to automatically change settings depending upon the conditions and the object. AI is also present in the front facing camera of OPPO R15.

What’s next?

As you can see, each R-series smartphone has been an inspiration from its predecessor. Gradually, the company has developed it as a globally known android flagship series. However, it was never introduced in one of the biggest smartphone markets of the world. Tomorrow, OPPO is putting its R-series in Indian market with the launch of OPPO R17 Pro. We will have to wait and see how the market receives the device with other competition around the corner.
