Here we have four of the best smartphones in the fiercely competitive mid-range department. Huawei just launched its new entry to the segment Honor 8X in the Indian market after releasing it in China last month. The smartphone giant is however to receive a stiff competition from the likes of Realme 2 Pro, Redmi Note 5 Pro, and Nokia 6.1 Plus. So before you get your hands on any of these devices, we are here to see which one takes the lead on paper by analyzing their specifications and prices.
Honor 8X vs. Redmi Note 5 Pro vs. Realme 2 Pro vs. Nokia 6.1 Plus Specifications
All the smartphones have more than enough to show on paper as far as their prices are concerned. Starting with the dual-sim support, all the smartphones are offering it. The phones have their own skins over the stock Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box, except for the Nokia 6.1 Plus, which competes with stock Android skin and runs on the Android One program.
Design and Display
Honor 8X hosts the biggest displays among all with 1080x2340p 6.5 inches panel and 396ppi. The next up is the Realme 2 Pro that holds a 6.30 inches of screen with similar resolution but a better pixel density of 409ppi. People with a liking for displays less than 6 inches might like the Nokia 6.1 Plus from HMD Global that flaunts a 5.80 inches screen with a resolution of 1080×2280 pixels. Redmi Note 5 Pro follows the same trend of being big in lower budget devices. The 5.99-inch display from Redmi Note 5 Pro holds 1080×2160 pixels of resolution. While all screens have Gorilla Glass, the glass version is undefined from all of them.
The phones are incredible for the mid-range segment. Realme 2 hosts a Polycarbonate body type with three different color variants including Blue Ocean, Ice Lake, and the Black Sea. While all of them have a strong build, we are still to pick on either Honor 8X’s metal body or Redmi Note 5 Pro’s metal built. By the looks, Nokia’s smaller phone defeats all others with an impressive premium built quality and three beautiful color options including gloss midnight blue, gloss white, and gloss black. However, if we have to consider an overall design and display ratio, we think that Realme 2 Pro has better viewing angles and a good quality design overall.
Winner: Realme 2 Pro
All four of these smartphones have marginally better cameras from their rivals in this price segment and even from some other devices from higher price segments. The Realme 2 Pro has a dual camera setup of the 16MP lens with f/1.7 aperture and 2MP lens with f/2.4 at the rear end. It gets competition from the Xiaomi product the Redmi Note 5 Pro that boasts dual-setup of the 12MP lens and a 5MP lens that has amazing quality. Above these two is Nokia 6.1 Plus that has an incredibly performing 16MP f/1.8 and 5MP camera set up at the rear end. Huawei’s new entry Honor 8X comes with a 20MP f/1.8 snapper coupled with the 2MP lens at the back. Looking at all ratings on paper, the HMD Global device Nokia 6.1 Plus delivers a perfect balance between details in close-up shots as well as long-range photos with dual LED flash.
Coming to the selfie cams, all the devices boast similar 16MP front snappers with f/2.0 aperture, except Redmi Note 5 Pro that offers a 20MP f/2.2 along with an LED flash. The camera winner is a hard call but we will give it to the Redmi Note 5 Pro considering its decency on both back and front snappers and a price 3,500 less than the closest rival Nokia’s 6.1 Plus.
Winner: Redmi Note 5 Pro
Hardware and Software
Realme 2 Pro comes with a 1.8GHz Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 606 processor. The device comes with a massive 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage, which is expandable up to 256GB through a microSD. Next up is Honor 8X’s HiSilicon Kirin 710 Octa-core processor clocking at 2.2GHz. Honor 8X hosts a 4GB RAM coupled with 64GB internal storage. The HMD Global device Nokia 6.1 Plus as well as Redmi Note 5 Pro offer same 4GB RAM with 64GB internal storage with similar Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 Octa-core processor. However, you can expand Nokia 6.1 up to 400GB with a microSD whereas you can only expand Redmi Note 5 Pro’s memory to 128GB with a microSD.
All these devices are running on Android Oreo 8.1 except Redmi Note 5 Pro, which comes with Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box but has received Android Oreo 8.1 update later. The Realme device has ColorOS 5.2 running over stock android. Honor 8X also features its own light and fast EMUI 8.2 skin. Redmi Note 5 Pro features MUI 9 over the stock android. Only Nokia 6.1 Plus offers the stock Android features running under the Android One program. Realme 2 Pro clearly wins the race among all with its massive RAM and internal storage.
Winner: Realme 2 Pro
Battery and Prices
The biggest battery is featured in Redmi Note 5 Pro with 4000mAh on board. The next is Honor 8X powered by a 3750mAh battery, followed by Realme 2 Pro with 3500mAh bank. The lowest and disappointing factor comes in Nokia6.1 Plus that only has a 3060mAh battery despite it being the highest priced device among the four at INR 15,999.
Honor 8X is tagged with a price of INR 14,999 and Realme 2 Pro at INR 13,990. The lowest priced device is Redmi Note 5 Pro available just at INR 12,477 at Paytm Mall.
Winner: Redmi Note 5 Pro
All the devices hit on the 15k segment of the Indian smartphone market. Being in a really close competition, the two devices that clearly have an edge are Realme 2 Pro and Redmi Note 5 Pro. Looking at the value for money provided by Xiaomi, the Redmi Note 5 Pro wins the battle between these four.
