Rumored to launch for months now, the Pixel 3a and 3a XL were finally unveiled yesterday in the Google I/O event by the search engine and tech giant. From the up-to-date vanilla Android to premium imaging experience, both the devices share characteristics with their elder brothers Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones. However, the affordable premium devices trade off some premium features to stay low at prices such as high-resolution, glass body, IP rating for dust and water resistance, and premium processor. Let’s get into what the two smartphones offer at what price.

Google Pixel 3a and 3a XL Display

First, we will talk about the displays of the two devices which are protected by Asahi Dragontrail glass. The Pixel 3a and the Pixel 3a XL feature a 5.6-inch and 6-inch OLED panels respectively with full HD+ resolution and an 18:9 aspect ratio. There’s an ‘always on’ feature in the devices that show time, app notifications, alarm, etc. information when the device is locked.

Google Pixel 3a and 3a XL Camera

Let’s get into the most anticipated imaging department. There are no changes whatsoever in the Pixel 3a and the Pixel 3a devices as both feature the similar 12.2MP camera modules at the back with f/1.8 aperture as the Pixel 3-series. The device sensor is coupled with dual pixel phase detection autofocus (PDAF0 and optical image stabilization (OIS) technology. Google’s ‘Night Sight’ is featured in the device cameras improving low-light imaging to a whole new level as seen in the Pixel 3 series.

The front of the devices has a different story though. There is no secondary ultra-wide angle lens to support the primary front sensor. Instead, both the smartphones only have an 8MP sensor with 84-degree wide-angle capturing ability and f/2.0 aperture.

Under the hood, both the devices are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 chipset which is a 10nm tech-based midrange processor coupled with eight Kryo 360 cores and Adreno 616 graphics processing unit (GPU). There are no storage and RAM variants. Instead, both devices come at a sole RAM and storage variant of 4GB and 64GB.

Supporting 18W fast charging out-of-the-box, both Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL have a decent battery capacity of 3,000 mAh and 3,700mAh respectively. There are stereo speakers, a capacitive fingerprint sensor at the rear end, and pressure sensitive active edges to ignite Google Assistant on-the-go. There is only one physical slot for SIM. However, both the smartphones have support for an e-SIM making them dual-SIM devices. Google is also promising three-year long security and OS updates on these two. They also come with custom-built Titan M chip for user data protection.
