The iPhone maker has released software updates across a range of its devices. Apple, in a move to secure its devices with latest updates, released iOS 12.1.1 for iPhones, iPod touch and iPad; Mojave 10.14.2 for devices running on macOS; and HomePod software 12.1.1.

The new iOS update 12.1.1 welcomes several new features including Live Photo during FaceTime, real-time text (RTT) on WiFi calling, and lastly the expanded dual-SIM support. Similarly, macOS Mojave 10.14.2 update also features support to RTT along with several minor polishes to the OS. And finally, the HomePod 12.1.1 brings support to Hong Kong and Mainland China, a move that clearly indicates the Apple strategy ahead of its launch in two Asian regions.

There is also an update on Shortcuts app that brought version 2.1.2 of the app with several bug fixes. The only update that was expected but didn’t come is watchOS 5.1.2 for the Apple Watch.

iOS 12.1.1 Update for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touch

Let’s start with iOS 12.1.1 that enabled haptic touch notification preview in iPhone XR using haptic touch. The update also enabled expanded dual SIM (eSIM) in all iPhones released in 2018 including AT&T in the US. Furthermore, it also brings small updates including one-tap shortcut during FaceTime calls to flip cameras, Live photo capturing during one-on-one FaceTime calls, sidebar hide option in News app on iPad and iPod touch, and improved stability for dictation and VoiceOver.

That’s not all as it also came with numerous bug fixes for Face ID, Messages, visual voicemail, HomePod, Voice Memos, and Clock. The update also brought an option for real-time text during WiFi calling on iPod touch and iPad.

macOS Mojave 10.14.2 Update for Mac Devices

Next up we have macOS Mojave 10.14.2 that brings RTT support to all the Mac models released in or after 2012. Apart from that, the 10.14.2 OS update also adds a menu button in the News app to open a story in the Safari browser. It also resolves the issue that perhaps prevented iTunes to play media on third-party AirPlay speakers.

Real-time texts are instantly transmitted while they are typed. This enables the recipient to read the sender’s text while that’s being typed, without waiting for the whole message to be sent.

Apple has also shared the instructions on how you can enable RTT on Mac OS as well as iOS.

HomePod 12.1.1 Update

The last part of the update was HomePod 12.1.1 that brings support in Hong Kong and Mainland China for the HomePod smart speakers. The update also enabled HomePod LEDs to illuminate during a Group FaceTime call.

Launched with the recent iOS 12, the Shortcut app required improvements and Apple bought it in no time with latest 2.1.2 version which brings a new button “Post to Tumblr”, improvements in localization, iCloud Sync improvements, and a lot more bug fixes. The function “Get Time Between Dates” can now tell the number of months between two dates.
